AstraZeneca has agreed to pay $5.3bn (£3.6bn) for a proposed $9bn settlement with the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) and two other pharmaceutical companies over allegations that it illegally marketed and marketed its cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor as an over-the-counter drug. AstraZeneca has agreed to pay the USFDA and two other companies a $9bn settlement over allegations that it illegally marketed and marketed Crestor as a treatment for the symptoms of coronary heart disease.
Crestor, a cholesterol-lowering drug, has been a leading contender in a class of cholesterol-reducing medications for more than two decades. In November 2010, a US jury in a trial involving Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and Merck & Co. was awarded $2.2bn in damages and a $10bn settlement over allegations that the company illegally marketed Crestor to patients in the US.
The USFDA and two other companies have been accused of illegally marketing Crestor as a treatment for patients with coronary heart disease.
The AstraZeneca settlement will cover a total of $9.5bn in cash, cash equivalents, and stock in the company's stock, and will pay AstraZeneca a total of $2.5bn in damages. In the US, the company is seeking a total of $2.3bn.
AstraZeneca will pay $10.9bn in settlements over allegations that the company illegally marketed Crestor as a treatment for the symptoms of coronary heart disease.
The settlements, announced today in London and in San Francisco, will cover $1.3bn, with the rest of the company's shares held by other pharmaceutical companies.
The settlement is a significant step forward for AstraZeneca and represents an important step in protecting the long-term safety of Crestor, a widely used cholesterol-lowering treatment, as well as a cost savings for patients in the US.
In addition, the settlements provide AstraZeneca with additional benefits, including:
AstraZeneca is the world's largest maker of pharmaceuticals and healthcare products, with a market share of around 4% in the US.
The settlement will be a significant step forward for AstraZeneca and will provide AstraZeneca with additional benefits, including:
The settlement follows an agreement between AstraZeneca and the USFDA that has been in effect for more than a decade, and will provide AstraZeneca with additional benefits, including:

Every medication has a specific function and therefore, any available information should be reviewed by a qualified healthcare professional before use.Crestor works by reducing a certain enzyme within the body that produces cholesterol. It belongs to a class of medications called statins.
Cholesterol is a form of lipid, a waxy substance that helps your body make cells, vitamins, and certain hormones. It is not inherently bad. Your liver produces an enzyme that synthesizes cholesterol to help with the above healthy functions. Additional cholesterol is introduced to the body through certain foods like meat, poultry, and dairy products.
There are two types of cholesterol: high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) and low-density lipoproteins (LDLs). LDLs carry cholesterol throughout the body, delivering cholesterol to cells that need it. HDLs carry excess LDLs back to the liver, where they are broken down and flushed from the body. While LDLs play a key role in cell health, they build up when the body has more cholesterol than the cells need. This buildup turns into plaque in the arteries (blood vessels). As plaque covers the artery walls, the blood vessels become narrow. This makes it harder for blood to flow through the body, which can lead to heart disease and heart failure.
Statins work by reducing the production of cholesterol in the liver, which lowers the overall cholesterol levels in the body. Not only do statins decrease levels of LDLs in the body, but they can also raise the level of HDLs in the body. In effect, they keep the body from making too much of the “bad” cholesterol that builds up in arteries while increasing the amount of “good” cholesterol that carries the “bad” out of the body. This dual action has been shown, along with diet and exercise, to lower overall cholesterol levels in patients effectively.
Crestor can be used to treat more common forms of cholesterol diseases as follows:Use of Crestor in hyperlipidemia (a condition in which the lipids in the body are excessive in order to stay in check) is not recommended, as it can have serious side effects like making the lips appear swollen and changing the colour of the skin. Additionally, individuals with a history of allergic reactions to statins should inform their healthcare provider before starting Crestor.
In addition to those side effects listed above, visit the for information about other medications that can be used to treat high cholesterol in the body. Always consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication or treatment.
Crestor (crestor-md) treats high cholesterol in the bodybad Lipid changes the lipid called “bad” cholesterol that builds up in arteries. This makes it harder for blood to flow to the body. This can lead to heart disease and heart diseaseil Health's cholesterol and blood pressure products can help to lower overall cholesterol levels in individuals effectively Crestor belongs to a class of medications known as “statins” (cholesterol-lowering medications). It works by blocking an enzyme in the body that produces cholesterol in the body. Without a block, the enzyme turns thatolesterol into a waxy substance known as a “olesterol- dysregulator” (MDD). This enzyme is in charge of breaking down “bad” cholesterol in the arteries. Crestor belongs to a different class of medication called “cholesterol-regulating statins” (also known as “statins”). They control the breakdown of “bad” cholesterol in the arteries by preventing another enzyme (HMG-CoA) from your liver from working properly. In effect, they keep your body from making too much of the “good” cholesterol that covers the walls of blood vessels while increasing the amount of “good” cholesterol that carries the “bad” out of your body.are known as “good” cholesterol — good for you! Crestor belongs to a different class of medication known as “bad” cholesterol or “top” cholesterol. They also work in the same way, by blocking an enzyme in the body called HMG-CoA reductase. Without a block, this enzyme turns over “bad” cholesterol in the body. Without a block, your body cannot make up for the block and you will start to lose its ability to use its “good” cholesterol.
Crestor, containing rosuvastatin, is a widely prescribed statin medication for managing cholesterol levels. It lowers LDL (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides while raising HDL (good cholesterol), reducing the risk of cardiovascular complications such as heart attacks and strokes. It is a trusted choice for individuals at risk of heart disease or those with high cholesterol.
